QUOTE OF THE DAY ...

"A vision without a task is but a dream.

A task without a vision is drudgery.

A vision and a task are the hope of the world!"

EARN YOUR EMPLOYEE'S "A" GAME ( con't)

Step 7 in earning your employee's "A-Game" sounds simple
... but it is very critical ... and often over-looked.

It is ... DEAL WITH REALITY!!

People who won't take risks or responsibility... give you honest
feedback ... are playing NOT to lose. Avoiding accountability is
an illusion ... which you, as a leader, should not ignore or accept.

If you don't determine the rules of accountability in your business,
you open the door to your employees to set their own.

Too often we don't tell our employees what accountability looks like
in our business ... yet we expect them to be accountable!!

What's accountability?
"Accountability is a personal choice to rise above one's
circumstances and demonstrate the ownership necessary
for achieving desired results!"

You could start by making a simple statement ... "Here's how accountability
works in our company!" ... and then sharing a short, simple list of rules ...
i.e. "We do what we say we're going to do ... when we're going to do it!"
et cetera ... et cetera.

And with your employees ... you can only take them where you've been.
You go first!!

The Ritz Carlton hotel chain has a terrific reputation for world class service
and quality ... and for resolving customer complaints quickly, correctly
and thoroughly. Their simple principle? "Who ever touches it first ...
owns it!" And it applies from the Hotel Manager right down through the
ranks ...

In closing, let me share with you the "Oz Principle" that defines/describes
all accountability-related activities.

ON THE LINE are several forms of accountability avoidance ...
"Wait And See" "It's Not My Job!" "Finger Pointing" "Ignore/Deny"
"Confusion: Tell Me What To Do" "Cover Your Tail"

BELOW THE LINE ... the "Blame Game" prevails.

But ... ABOVE THE LINE exists the world of engagement ... ownership ...
accountability ...

Four simple steps = SEE IT ... OWN IT ... SOLVE IT ... DO IT ...

Where do you want your leadership team and employees to "live"?
"It will be what YOU make it!"

Earn Your Employee's "A" Game (con't)

Fully Alive Leadership Principle #6 =
SET THE BAR HIGH!!

So many people convince themselves "I can't!" and thus
sell themselves short on what they can achieve in life.

Your job as a leader is to help identify and develop the
"greatness" in your people that they don't see in themselves.

It's not manipulation. It IS about telling them the truth!! When
you see something in a person . . . and communicate that to them
. . . they are changed . . . moved.

There is great satisfaction in achieving a "bar" (goal) set reasonably
high . . . and people will clear the bar where you set it!

How do you get people to perform at an extraordinary level? Here
are some suggestions . . .
1) Insist on excellence
2) Give them the necessary tools
3) Believe in them
4) Care about them

Once you see change beginning, how can you maintain the
momentum? Here's a couple of simple ideas . . .
1) When "successes" occur, make sure your people get the
biggest cheers. It's about them . . . not about you!

2) Develop a habit of writing (not typing, not e-Mailing) a
personal note of "Thanks" or "Congratulations" to every
employee who achieves some milestone . . . accomplishes
an important goal. Express your genuine appreciation. Mail
it to their home.

You will be surprised at the impact this small gesture will generate.

And remember, "In ALL things . . . the leader MUST go FIRST!"

So . . . who do you need to write a note to . . . today?

QUOTE OF THE WEEK

"If you work just for money, you'll never make it,
but if you love what you're doing and you always
put the customer first . . . success will be yours."

EARN YOUR EMPLOYEE'S "A" GAME (con't)

What's the 5th Fully Alive Leadership (FAL) principle?

What makes a great leader? When "C" level employees were asked
what they look for in their leaders, most gave 2 responses:
#1 -- "Great leaders are always fully present . . . right here . . .
right now!"

Simply put, FAL #5, Part 1 is . . .
"You are always here; the time is always now!"

Every great leader whose life has been carefully analyzed
has lived by this code. And this is where your greatest
leadership potential lies!!

Ask yourself this question . . .
"What would happen right here . . . right now . . . if I "showed up"
consistently . . . fully alive and present . . . day after day?"

As was said in an earlier FAL principle, you "live" in a fishbowl.
Those who look to you for leadership "check you out" when you
check in to work . . . and key off your mood, your "presence", your
"being".

They know when you are "with them" . . . when you're "fully alive"
. . . when you're "fully present (engaged) in what's going on.

Guess what! Showing up "fully alive . . . fully present" is contagious!!
When you do . . . most of those who look to you for leadership will
show up this way also.

Their second response?
#2 --FAL #5, Part 2 is "Provide clarity of vision for us. Tell
us where we are going . . . with a high level of certainty".

When you, as the leader, commits to "being fully present . . . right here
. . . right now" . . . and to consistently and clearly communicating your
vision of where your company is going, why and how . . .

As Jack Altschuler said, "This has a very energizing, trust-building
impact on those who look to you for leadership!"
